What is Minor Nasal Reconstruction?
Small nasal defects are defects where there is only loss of skin and cartilage or bone of the nose. The inner lining of the nose remains intact. These defects can be reliably repaired with tissue from the forehead and cartilage from the ear or ribs. Minor nasal reconstruction or nose job can manage these defects and will require 2 stages of functional or cosmetic surgery, each 3 weeks apart. That said, sometimes 3 reconstructive procedures are required. It will depend on your unique needs.
Who is a Good Candidate for Minor Nasal Reconstruction with Skin Grafts?
If you have minor cosmetic or functional issues with your nose, including a deviated nasal septum or nasal tip concerns, you are likely a good candidate for minor nasal reconstruction. That said, there are some criteria we look for at Face Institute to ensure this is the right procedure for you, including:
- In good overall health
- Have completed all your facial growth
- Are a nonsmoker
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have realistic expectations of treatment
What to Expect During a Minor Nasal Rhinoplasty Procedure
To start your minor nasal reconstruction, we will begin by administering general anesthesia to ensure you’re completely comfortable. From there, Dr. Faris will make the necessary incisions to remove tissue from the forehead and cartilage grafts from the ears or ribs. This tissue and cartilage will then be carefully placed along the nose and secured into place.
How long the procedure takes will depend on the level of reconstruction needed, the surgical techniques used, and the amount of tissue needed from the donor sites. It typically takes several hours.
Minor Nasal Reconstruction Recovery
More often than not, you will be able to go home the same day as your surgery. You will likely have some redness, bruising, swelling, and discomfort, but those side effects will fade in the days and weeks as you heal. In the first 10 days, the tissue and cartilage will form their own blood supply in the nose, and the donor site will heal.
During this recovery, you will want to rest as much as possible, avoid strenuous activities, and avoid putting pressure on the treatment sites. Alcohol and smoking will also need to be avoided to ensure a smooth recovery. You’ll have several follow-up appointments with Dr. Faris to ensure you’re healing well.
